Basic ’Etiquette’ of a Poker RoomBesides knowing the actual rules of the game, poker players who wish to gamble in a casino should know the rules that apply to the facility itself. These regulations vary form casino to casino, but still there are some similarities between the general rules of public poker rooms. The most popular poker variants offered by casinos include Texas hold'em, Sevens-card stud and Omaha hold'em.

Most public poker rooms offer in ring game and tournament format. The currency of the casinos is of course the chip. Chips can be purchased directly from the dealer of the game or at special windows around the game table. In some rooms cash is allowed to play but only in bigger notes, like one hundred US dollars, and players are not allowed to buy chips from each other.

Seating is managed on a first-come, first-served basis and there can be long waiting lists for poker seats. In some casinos seat reservation can be done on the phone or even on-line and seats will be held for a dinner brake of a couple hours. Players can be on different waiting lists for different tables of kinds of game at the same time.

Casinos may charge an hourly fee for a poker table seat, called the time fee. This kind of fee is usual in high stakes games. At the same time low or middle stakes poker gamblers have to pay a fee to the casino for conducting the game. The fee is generally five to ten percent of each poker hand and it is sometimes referred to as the drop as the dealer drops the fee into a container at the table. These fees have to be paid as they are the only revenue of the casino because poker is a player versus player kind of game and the casino has no interest on the money wagered.

Besides these rules, there are some other applying to the protection of the hands (players must protect their hands by holding their cards or placing an object on their cards), certain non-verbal declarations( knocking or tapping the table is for example a check, while tossing or pushing cards away means a fold).

The "show one, show all" rule means that if a player reveals his hole cards to another player, all players have the right to see the hole cards. Poker players are not allowed to hide their chips or their cards and are prohibited to speak foreign languages or use cell phones.

Players are not allowed to advise each other on how to play a hand, which is called the "one player to a hand" rule. Specific rules may vary in each casino, but these general regulations apply in most public poker rooms.
