A Few Different Types of Poker Games
Although Texas Hold Em has taken the world by storm since the advent of online gambling, there are also many different types of poker games that you can choose to play to add a bit of diversity to your playing schedule.
Many casinos themselves provide basic rules for the games, and of course you can always find more in-depth guide here at OPR. A few different types of poker games you may find at your poker room include Caribbean stud poker and Red Dog poker for a change of pace from your usual game.
Red Dog Poker
This game seems to be gaining a lot of popularity among many poker players in both live casinos and online. Red Dog Poker was only introduced to casinos about 150 years ago making it a relatively new game. It was originally known as “Acey-Deucy,” “Ace-Deuce” or “In Between” before the name Red Dog caught on and stuck.
Though called Red Dog “Poker” the game is more similar to Pai Gow and Baccarat/Blackjack. The main similarities to regular poker are how the cards are ranked, and the fact that when you place a bet it’s either a “raise” or a “call.”
Playing Red Dog Poker
Cards from 2-10 are ranked according to their face value. A Jack is worth 11, Queen 12, King 13, and Aces 14. The suits make no difference. If the spread among your initial cards is larger than one, your payout will be based on your third card. Once you ante, you are dealt two cards facing up. Then you bet on whether your third card winds up ranking between your first 2 cards. The smaller the spread of that third card, the bigger pay out.
As you can see, although it isn’t a real “poker” game, it is quite intriguing.
Caribbean Stud Poker
Another type of poker game, Caribbean Stud (or Casino Jackpot Five Card Stud Poker in the UK) is a real poker game experiencing great growth. One of the main differences between Caribbean stud poker and regular poker is that you are playing against the house instead of other players thus eliminating the need for bluffing and other deceptive techniques used in many standard poker games.
The rules are very similar to five card stud poker. One of the things that has be to remembered though is that the game has a stronger house edge compared to some other types of poker games. One of the features about this particular style of poker is that many casinos will offer a progressive jackpot which helps offset the stronger house edge.
Playing Caribbean Stud
Although the rules for Caribbean stud poker are simple they are specific. Once the player has placed his ante, the dealer will deal five cards face down to himself, and face up to each player. Then the dealer will turn one of his cards up. Next the players can look at their hands. Two additional rules are the players may only look at their own hand, and may not discuss them with other players at the table.
If a player thinks they can beat the dealer they must double their ante, otherwise they forfeit the ante. The dealer’s hand is only counted if they have an ace/king minimum.
These are just a few different types of poker you will find, but there are quite a few more you can find in our poker games section.
