Opponent Type Says It All

An experienced poker player will always take into consideration the following factors: position, hand value, table image and prior wagering action in order to decide what his next moves should be in any given situation. We have already largely spoken about the importance of learning your opponents' behavior at the tables. In this article, we would like to discuss four types of players you are likely to come across during your visits to traditional and online poker rooms. These four types are: scared, clueless, wild and solid.

Scared

In general, a scared opponent is pretty easy to beat. Their betting action is typically weak, so you can draw against them as much as you want. They are so afraid of making the wrong move that they usually don't act on the value of their hand, even when it's relatively strong. Nevertheless, there is one thing you should always remember: there are different types of players seated at the table, not just the scared ones. These are to be taken into consideration as well. You don't want to take the risk of making a smart move against a scared opponent only to be completely beaten by a player of another type.

Clueless

A clueless opponent is also easy to defeat. Generally speaking, you should not alter your gambling style when playing against such an opponent. Stick to your regular moves. Raise when your hand is strong, call when you have a good drawing hand and respect his large bets. The bonus you get you can read him very easily. He is not yet skilled enough to hide his emotions. Basically, no poker face at all. And, one last thing: don't expect a clueless player to be predictable. Since they play without prior knowledge concerning the game their moves are likely to be irrational.

Wild

The key to defeating a wild player is realizing that his betting action and hand strength are not consistent. A strong bet is often meant to intimidate and does not indicate real power. The only thing you can do to curb such a move, is make an even bigger raise. You need to project that you are not scared of him because your own hand is not any worse. Don't be afraid of displaying aggressive behavior as well. And, the advantage is that if you follow the above advice correctly (and have a little bit of luck), you'd eventually make your wild opponent fold.

Solid

Winning when you have solid opponents is a difficult task. This is because these players, much like you, are well prepared. Generally, they know what you know and outsmarting them is very tough. If they happen to raise, it is because they usually have a strong hand to back up such a move. And, even if they have nothing of value they would still not give in easily. What's even worse is that, sometimes, if they suspect from your betting action you're weak they can put moves on you in order to trip you. The only thing left for you to do is take advantage of their predictability.
