Online poker glossary is an essential poker tool for all poker players, beginners and sharks alike. Virtually all popular poker variations boast a language of their own. Players who seek to enjoy and win the games they play, must have a source of information that includes all the widely-used poker terminology and all the necessary explanations. And, that's us!

 

A

 

Ace- A card that services as either the strongest or the weakest card of the deck. In Hi/Lo poker games, the ace is considered both high and low, it all depends on how it's used.


Ace High- In High poker games, a hand lower than one pair featuring an Ace as its highest card.


Ace in the Hole- Holding an Ace as a player's downcard (cards dealt face down). Since it's a very desirable situation, the phrase refers to having a certain advantage over your opponents.


Action- Checking/Raising/Betting. The phrase refers to the liveliness of the poker game, in terms of how active the participating players are.


Active Player- A player who is still competing for the pot. (Still in the game)


Advertise- Intentionally letting your opponents know that you only play certain hands, in order to bluff them sometime later.


Agent- A thief's ally in a crooked game.


Aggressive- A player who raises and reraises a lot. The term describes a player's style of play.


Alcohol- A player may say "I'll call."


All in- A player who invests all of his stack in the pot goes "all in."


Alligator- A tough poker player who withstands pressure easily.


Alone player-
A cheating player with no collaborators.


American Airlines- A pair of Aces (the A-A hand).


Ammunition- Chips.


Angle- A poker move which is considered to be in the gray area in terms of its legality. An angle is an unethical maneuver that gives its performer (or as commonly used 'shooter') an unjust advantage over his opponents.


Ante- Chips placed in the pot by each player before the dealer deals the cards. (The rules of ante vary in different poker versions).


Apple- A huge game. Frequently, the biggest game in a venue.


Artist- See the term 'Mechanic.'


Ax- A certain percentage of the pot collected by venue operators to cover management expenses.
