Poker Players Alliance Plans to Spend $3 Million Lobbying Congress
The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has been trying very hard to get the United States Congress to overturn the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
The UIEGA prohibits financial institutions from handling transactions between U.S. residents and offshore online gambling companies.
The European Commission alleges that American internet gambling laws are unjustified and discriminatory.
The Poker Players Alliance, chaired by former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, has announced it intends to spend US $3 million to lobby this session of Congress to overturn the 2006 the UIGEA, or at a minimum, to carve out an exemption for online poker.
Given poker's popularity and the ease of online access, the sport will only grow stronger in the years to come, and the United States may wish to place its bet on a WTO-compliant, revenue-generating law to regulate online gaming.
