Poker Players Dealt 18 Months

Professional poker players and brothers, Mohammed Imran and Mohammed Irfan, aged 33 and 36 respectively, will be playing poker again soon, but in prison. Each of the losing players will be spending 18 months in jail for stealing over £150,000 from automatic cash machines in order to bankroll their Vegas gambling spree. The cash was swiped over a three-day period back in 2005.

Prior to being arrested for what appears to be their first offence, the brothers from Cumbernauld, Scotland competed regularly against other high-roller poker players at top Vegas casinos. Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, is alleged to have been one of them. The Bellagio Hotel, featured in the blockbuster film Ocean's 11, was apparently one of the pair's regular gaming spots.

The swindle involved the thieves using information obtained by an insider at the Bank of Scotland's Halifax division, which manages the bank's online systems. When the two financial entitles merged around three years ago, their auto-teller programming system was overhauled, leaving it susceptible to would-be crooks. Irfan and Imran overcame the security of ATMs by merely using a (supposedly) expired Halifax Bank of Scotland keycard. The Scottish court was informed that between May 29th and June 1st, 2005, the Mohammed brothers carried out approximately 380 withdrawals at cash machines located throughout Glasgow.

Eventually the bank realised they were being had and the keycard used in the scam was traced back to Shahana Shad, Imran's sister-in-law. Shad did admit to being a client of the bank, however, she said claimed she never possessed the card. When raided, the homes of the accused, £14,480 were discovered in a safe belonging to Imran, and another £140,160 was found in Irfan's safe. The not-so-dynamic duo was originally charged with making off with some £486,320 in total.
