Scotty Nguyen - 1998 WSOP Champion's Biography

Scotty Nguyen was born in 1962 in Nha Trang, Vietnam. He arrived in the United States at the age of 14. Nguyen admits that he was never a particularly diligent student, mainly because he spent most of his time playing poker with his friends. Today, he is one of the most active poker players in the poker industry, boasting money finishes in over 100 events. His most prestigious victory took place in 1998, when he nabbed the coveted WSOP Champion title. Nguyen proudly holds 4 World Series of Poker bracelets. Nguyen's reputation as a carefree poker player hides his fierceness at the table. In fact, his win rate at final tables is about 80%.

One particular quote will immortalize Nguyen forever: "You call this one and it's all over, baby." It was at the 1998 WSOP main event. Nguyen was playing heads up against poker pro Kevin McBride in the final hand. McBride was apparently quite confident that he's taking home at least 50% of the pot in light of the board's full house, but Nguyen indeed managed to surprise his opponent. He outplayed McBride with a stronger full house. He was the one to eventually collect the $1,000,000 first place prize.

After participating in several WPT final tables, he ultimately won the WPT 2006 World Poker Open tournament in January. His opponent was prominent poker player Michael Mizrahi. The list of talented poker players who took part in that memorable event included, Michael Mizrahi, Eric Cloutier, Gavin Smith, Josh Arieh and Liz Lieu. Nguyen, also nicknamed "the Prince of Poker," had to beat over 320 participants.

Nguyen is indeed one of the most successful players in the poker world. On top of his amazing win at the 1998 WSOP final event, he also received first place prizes for winning the following tournaments: 2004 Fest al Lago III, California State Poker Championship, 2003 Five Diamond - WPT Season 2, World Poker Finals WPT Season 2, Legends of Poker WPT Season 2, Four Queens Poker Classic, Hall of Fame Poker Classic, Legends of Poker WPT Season 1, LA Poker Classic, Heavenly Hold 'em, America's Poker Classic, Austrian Classic, Orleans Open, Jack Binion World Poker Open and others.

In an interview taken a while ago, Nguyen confessed that he really liked spending money. He was quoted as saying, "If I have $10,000, I will spend $9,000. I just go out and have fun." The way some see it, he can afford to. During the course of his long and arduous gaming career he won over $6,700,000.
