One popular strategy is the counting of poker outs. An "out" is a card that you've determined from all the evidence you can garner will give you a winning hand.

 

Texas Hold'em Poker Strategy and Outs

Texas Hold'em Poker lends itself to the strategy of using outs. When engaging in counting outs, you must first analyze the table according to how people are betting and any table cards that may be showing. Because you're never entirely sure what other players are holding, this strategy is inexact at best. The same can be said to be true when you apply this system to Omaha strategy. However in Omaha counting outs can be even more complex, especially in the High/Low version of the game.

 

Outs Example in Texas Hold'em

Here is a typical example regarding outs in Texas Hold'em Poker strategy. Your hole cards are a Q,K and the flop reveals at 10, A and K. What may make you a winner? The pair of Kings isn't enough due to the fact that there's an Ace on the table. A Jack would give you straight and a King and a Queen or two more Queens would give you a full house. Additionally there are various other cards, such as an Ace or 10 that can also result in your winning. That means that after the flop there are a total of 15 outs-three Queens, two Kings, four Jacks, three Aces and three Tens.

 

If you have 15 outs and two cards left to go, it means that you have a good chance of taking the hand. However, you don't really have 15 outs due to the fact that another Ace and even a Jack could help one of the other players more. That's true if they've been holding a pair of Aces or Jacks in the hole. If table cards give them three of a kind, and they pull either a Queen or Ten, they'll have a full house and win.

 

 

Problems with Poker Outs

We can see that the primary problem in counting outs has to do with the fact that you are never quite sure what other players need to win. In our above example, when we consider what may put the other players over the top, our 15 outs may diminish to nine-four Jacks, two Kings and three Queens.

 

But nine outs is really a best-case scenario due to the fact that some of our outs may be in the hands of other players. We may just have eight, seven or six. How do you calculate what cards are still in play? You do this by studying how others are wagering and analyzing their play in relationship to what cards are on the table and what sort of players they are-loose, tight, aggressive, passive or a mix.

 

Applying Outs to Texas Hold'em Poker Strategy

Counting outs can be one of many tools that you may utilize in your Texas Hold'em Poker strategy. This is not a cut and dry technique. You need to use your powers of observation to understand players' tells, how they are using table position and what their wagering patterns are.

 

Additionally, instinct can come in handy when counting outs and determining your actual chances of garnering an out on the turn or the river. Determining outs will help make you a better player but it does not guarantee that you'll always make the correct decision when it comes to checking, seeing, raising or folding.
